WE KNOW LOSING A CHILD TO BRAIN CANCER IS NOT RIGHT
Richard and Carole lost their son suddenly to an aggressive
form of brain cancer. We know this is not right.
Together, we can make it right.
James Szekely was 31-years-old when he started getting headaches that came and went suddenly and often. When he eventually went to the doctor with trouble seeing out of his right eye, the diagnosis was dire.
Four days after seeing his doctor, James had his first brain operation with surgeons removing two tumours on either side of his brain.
All in all, James had seven operations. He survived 18 months before glioblastoma – an aggressive form of brain cancer – took his life.
‘If any good could come from James’ death, we hope it’s that people are more aware. That they go to the doctor when something doesn’t feel quite right. That there is more funding available for research and clinical trials so others don’t have to experience what we have,' said Richard.
‘That is why we make a contribution to QIMR Berghofer each year – to do our bit in sparing other parents this sadness,’ he said.
YOU CAN HELP FIND CURES FOR THE MOST
INSIDIOUS DISEASES OF OUR TIME
Cancer, dementia, mesothelioma, heart disease, depression… these are some of the most insidious and treacherous diseases of our time.
Families often say how a loved-one was ‘completely healthy’ and ‘showed no signs of being unwell’ when they were suddenly struck by illness, or worse, taken from us with little warning.
You can help our researchers continue to make discoveries into these nasty diseases, and many more…
It is a nasty beast, and we must be just as ruthless in our determination to be rid of it
Professor Day is passionate about further understanding brain cancer – one of the deadliest diseases researched here at QIMR Berghofer. His team is developing therapies to improve patients’ lives and are invested in ensuring the future of health is filled with hope.

HELP US SAVE LIVES
It's not right that these terrible diseases cause so much suffering.
Together, we can do something about it.
