Histological samples are critical to observing the appearance of normal vs diseased cells in microscopic detail. Knowing what a normal tissue looks like and how it normally works is important for recognizing different diseases. We cater to the needs of scientists from the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute as well as national and international institutions. We are committed to excellence, quality, consultation, clinical evaluation and collaboration.

The Histology facility provides technical services and also trains and consults on matters relating to:

  • Routine paraffin and cryo histology
  • Special stains (e.g. Masson’s, Sirius Red, Perl’s)
  • Immunohistochemistry (Tyramide Signal Amplification) and antibody optimisation
  • FISH and CISH labelling
  • TMA preparation and high-resolution digitisation of histology slides (e.g. Vectra Imaging System).

The facility stocks a broad selection of commonly used primary antibodies and secondary detection antibodies to label mouse, rat, rabbit, goat, sheep, hamster, guinea pig and chicken primary antibodies with horseradish peroxidase, alkaline phosphatase, Alexa fluorescent or Tyramide (TSA) markers.
