Undergraduate Research Traineeship

As part of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Health Research Program, QIMR Berghofer offers an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander undergraduate student a paid 12-month work experience placement.

QIMR Berghofer values the integrity, solidarity and resilience of Indigenous Australians, the traditional owners and caretakers of this country, and pledge our expertise to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people overcome the disparity between their health status and that of non-Indigenous Australians.

Students must be enrolled in their second or third year of study in a science related degree. The successful applicant will have demonstrated a proficiency in their chosen university course as evidenced by academic performance. Eligible applicants are required to be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and provide confirmation of Aboriginality, in the form of a letter of support from a community representative or organisation. Prior to lodging an application, students are advised to make contact with a QIMR laboratory and confirm the potential for their undertaking a placement with the Institute.

The traineeship is valued at approximately $12,000 per annum and serves to remunerate the successful applicant for a paid placement of up to 1 day each week for 12 months. The trainee is required to undertake full-time academic study for the duration of their traineeship. Appointment is for 12 months.

To be considered for the traineeship position, you must submit:

  • a copy of your academic transcript
  • contact details of an Indigenous referee
  • contact details of an academic referee
  • letter of support from an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person or organisation, affirming the applicant as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person; or documentation that serves to prove Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • a letter outlining why you’d like to undertake a placement at QIMR Berghofer and your interest in Indigenous health research.

Applications will be accepted between May 1st and July 30th; with appointment to the traineeship before the end of August.  Please submit your applications to the Manager of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research – Greg Pratt at IHRP@qimrberghofer.edu.au.
