Just one life lost
to Melanoma is
one too many
This year alone, nearly 2000 Australians are predicted to die from melanoma. But thankfully, our research is saving lives. Support our researchers and give generously to our Melanoma Appeal.
Jo Crotty shares her story
It was late July 2006, early in the morning, and my husband Rohan was playing with our two eldest boys aged two and one in our bedroom. One of the boys jumped on Rohan’s right leg, near his groin area, and Rohan felt a lump for the first time.
I remember him coming out of the bedroom, saying “Look at this sweetheart!” It was a huge lump— like he had been hit hard by a baseball. It certainly didn’t look normal so we made an appointment to get it checked out.
We were referred to a surgeon, and within three weeks the lump was surgically removed. It was then the doctor told Rohan that the melanoma they removed was malignant. They had removed 11 lymph nodes, where four nodes were positive for melanoma. Promisingly, his margins were all clear.
Unfortunately, the battle had just begun…
OUR RESEARCH IS
We launched the Melanoma Risk Predictor online test earlier this year, and we have already seen the direct impact our research has had on the lives of others.
In Their Own Words
'After reading about the QIMR Berghofer Melanoma Risk Predictor in the Courier Mail, I signed on and was shocked to discover that I was in the highest risk band for melanoma. I made a skin check appointment immediately, and have just had a Level 1 melanoma removed from my arm. So an enthusiastic and heartfelt thank you for all the brilliant work you are doing!'

'I just wanted to say I did your test and I was shocked at my Very much above average risk, so I booked a skin check. The doctor removed two moles and one came back as Melanoma insitu. Phew, thankfully we got it at stage 1. You guys helped me dodge a bullet so a huge thank you!'
Meg, diagnosed with stage 1 melanoma after completing the Melanoma Risk Predictor
'I completed the QIMR Berghofer Melanoma Risk Predictor and received an Above Average risk factor. I made a doctor’s appointment to show her two suspect spots on my body. She took two shave biopsies, and my cheek came back as a threatening Intraepidermal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). She then needed to perform a large excision on my cheek. Thankfully, the results came back with clear margins and in situ. Thank you for bringing this awareness to the forefront.'

OUR MELANOMA RESEARCH IS ONGOING
The essence of our medical research is translational, meaning that we convert promising laboratory results into real life treatment methods for patients. The Melanoma Risk Predictor is a result of just one branch of research. Support our many researchers as we tackle this insidious disease from every angle.
