Queensland Governor to be QIMR Berghofer Patron

His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC Governor of Queensland has agreed to be patron of the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.

QIMR Berghofer Director, Professor Frank Gannon has welcomed the decision and looks forward to working closely with the Governor, as the Institute enters its 70th year in 2015.

“His Excellency has shown a great deal of commitment to, and interest in the world-class research undertaken at our facility at Herston,” Professor Gannon said.

“The vice-regal patronage is a tremendous honour for QIMR Berghofer.

“We were privileged to have the former Chief Justice as Chairman of the Council of QIMR Berghofer from June 2013 until his appointment as Governor.”

He was sworn in as the 26th Governor of Queensland at Parliament House in July 2014.

In his speech at the swearing in ceremony, His Excellency said that one of his essential goals would be “to seek to support, encourage and inspire all Queenslanders” and to do all he could to “uphold and promote the advancement of our great State”.

Governor de Jersey was called to the Bar in 1971 and appointed to Her Majesty’s Counsel in 1981.

A Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland, His Excellency was appointed Chief Justice of Queensland in 1998.
