QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute has been ranked seventh in the world in a new index measuring innovation and industry impact.
QIMR Berghofer is the only Australian institution in the top 15 for ‘patent citations’* in the Times Higher Education Company UK index.
QIMR Berghofer Director and CEO Professor Frank Gannon said the achievement demonstrates that the Institute’s research program is extremely relevant for industry—and ultimately for patients.
“It is incredibly encouraging to know that the work of our scientists here in Brisbane is having an impact,” Professor Gannon said.
“Our goal is to make sure that continues to grow into the future and some of our recent announcements show that this is happening at QIMR Berghofer.”
The ranking is based on indicators sourced from Elsevier Scopus—which is considered to be the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings—through the World University Rankings portal.
QIMR Berghofer’s ranking places it among illustrious company, with the Scripps Research Institute, The Rockefeller University, Pasteur Institute, and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
“QIMR Berghofer is continuing to develop collaborations with industry partners around the world and looking at opportunities to develop new industries locally,” Professor Gannon said.
“We want to ensure that our research progresses from the laboratory to the hospital or the clinic.”
The ranking is based on the number of citations as a proportion of the publications from the institute.
QIMR Berghofer publishes very extensively with more than two peer reviewed papers per day.
