QIMR and Sunsuper dream of a world without cancer

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research has announced Sunsuper as a major sponsor of the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer benefitting the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR). The ride will raise much needed funds to support world class cancer research being undertaken at QIMR.

“We are delighted to welcome Sunsuper as the “powered by” sponsor of our signature fundraising event and congratulate them on their tremendous community spirit,” said QIMR’s Director Professor Frank Gannon. “I hope this is the beginning of a long partnership with this great Australian organisation in the interest of advancing cancer research”.

“Cancer is one of the greatest medical challenges of our generation and it is wonderful to see Sunsuper, its staff and members getting behind this fantastic fundraising event. Half of our laboratories are dedicated to understanding the underlying causes of cancer with the ultimate aim being to develop improved detection and treatments. With one in two Australians expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, the need has never been greater”.

Sunsuper CEO Tony Lally said the Fund was proud to come on board as one of the Ride to Conquer Cancer’s major sponsors.

“There would be very few among our million members and 600 staff who have not been affected by cancer in some way, so the money the Ride will raise to support the world class research undertaken by those at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research is vitally important,” Mr Lally said.

“This promises to be a fantastic community event and we at Sunsuper are delighted that, through the Ride, we can join QIMR in their gallant fight against this potentially deadly disease.”

The Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer is a unique two day 200 kilometre bike ride that will be held in Australia for the first time this year. The event aims to raise money and awareness for cancer research. It will unite people of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities in one amazing show of force and determination. It takes strength in numbers to conquer cancer and thousands will join our scientists on this epic journey. The ride will take place on August 20-21, 2011 through Queensland’s scenic countryside.
