Dr Sarah Medland a Tall Poppy

Dr Sarah Medland has been recognised at the 2010 Queensland Young Tall Poppy Science Awards.

The Young Tall Poppy Science Awards rewards early career researchers who have achieved significant scientific milestones and have demonstrated their willingness and ability to engage people in science.

Dr Medland’s work covers a range of genetics studies, including the use of prescription drugs and gene variants in Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) aims to improve the effectiveness of treatment programs for these patients.

“I am honoured to have received this award and would like to thank all of those who have participated in the studies, my colleagues and collaborators,” said Dr Medland.

“Working in science is very rewarding and I hope by sharing the results of my work with the wider community I am helping raise awareness of the importance of medical research and inspiring the scientists of tomorrow.”

QIMR’s Acting Director Adèle Green said this is great recognition of these young scientists and their ability to effectively communicate to a wide audience.

“QIMR young researchers have received this award for two years running. The consecutive awards show QIMR’s researchers’ strength in research that is applicable to everyone.”

The winners represent the brightest researchers investigating the important issues that benefit all Australians and the world such as improved health treatments and finding solutions to today’s human, social and environmental problems. The Australian Institute of Policy and Science Executive runs the award annually.

The 2010 Queensland Young Tall Poppy Science Awards were presented at the Premier’s Science and Innovation Reception by the Queensland Chief Scientist, Professor Peter Andrews AO at a ceremony on Tuesday 23 November.
