Bike boys update

An epic journey of over 4,300 kilometres to raise funds and awareness for the Queensland Institute of Medical Research ended today at Bondi beach in Sydney as three young men from Brisbane arrived 32 days after leaving Fremantle on their bikes. For Tos Parkinson, Stephen Harkin and Dean Martin it took guts, courage, 1,200 kilometres across the harsh, lonely Nullarbor, 3 bikes and no support crew.

“The aim of this ride was to let people know that QIMR has research programs all over Australia to benefit all Australians and that we need support to continue to save lives,” said QIMR Development Manager, Christine Borthwick.

It takes a certain person to give up the comforts of home to battle desert heat, headwinds, rain, loneliness and fatigue all in the name of a good cause and these men have proven that the true measure of courage and generosity is in giving.

“The three of us have all been touched by cancer and other illnesses so the challenge to undertake this ride to help QIMR was something we couldn’t pass up. We’ve already ridden from Sydney to the Gold Coast twice but thought that this would provide a different adventure and help medical research at the same time,” said Stephen.

To date the bike trek has raised close to $4,000 and more is desperately needed for QIMR’s cancer immunotherapy trials.
