Adele Green declared a Queensland Great

QIMR Berghofer’s world-renowned skin cancer researcher, Professor Adele Green AC, has received another accolade, officially proclaimed a Queensland Great.

The honour was announced by Premier Campbell Newman to launch Queensland Week.

The Premier said the Queensland Greats had played a significant role in the history and development of the state through their long-term dedication and commitment to the community.

“It is an honour to acknowledge these inspiring Queenslanders who had made a lasting, positive difference to our great state,” Mr Newman said.

“I congratulate each one of them for receiving one of the most prestigious accolades our state can bestow.”

Professor Green is Head of the Cancer and Population Studies Group at QIMR Berghofer and has been at the frontline of melanoma research for more than 20 years.

Her groundbreaking research was the first to establish the role sunscreen plays in the prevention of skin cancer.

In 2004 she was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for her service to medical research and public health, and for scientific leadership. She was the Queensland finalist in the Australian of the Year Awards last year, and was also named Overall Winner of the Westpac Australian Financial Review 100 Women of Influence Awards last year.

Other individuals receiving Queensland Great awards yesterday were Brisbane’s former Lord Mayor, Sallyanne Atkinson, Indigenous Elder and advocate Fred Conway, and arts philanthropists Dr Patrick Corrigan and Win Schubert.
