70 years of medical research celebrated in style

Days after the conclusion of the Second World War, the Queensland Government declared war on disease by introducing the Queensland Institute of Medical Research Bill.

Fast forward to 31 October 2015, Dr Andrew Rochford, National Health Editor for Channel Seven News, rallied 320 QIMR Berghofer friends to celebrate 70 years of exceptional research with an exceptional three course meal at the International Convention Centre, RNA Showgrounds.

The Gala was a rich tapestry of our history, current friends and staff woven together to celebrate our journey and successes and to raise valuable funds to help us to continue to expand our understanding, diagnosis and treatment of some of the world’s most devastating diseases.

Professor Frank Gannon, our Director and CEO spoke to the audience about our research and the future of QIMR while the Hon Cameron Dick, Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, affirmed our reputation, research outcomes and position on the world research stage. Dr Stacey Edwards provided an emotional link between her family history with breast cancer and her life work in breast cancer research for QIMR Berghofer.

Mr Clive Berghofer spoke about the value of philanthropy and his commitment to ongoing funding of medical research at QIMR Berghofer.

Guests participated in silent and live auctions, raising money for the exceptional work our researchers are carrying out right here in Queensland. Our PhD students entertained guests with their live demonstration of a 1940’s medical research laboratory.

Nitrogenie provided frozen treats for guests as they danced the night away to the ultimate party band, Savvy.

All our guests were offered a beautifully presented QIMR Berghofer history book to take home with them.

We would like to thank all our guests, sponsors and friends,  and trust you will enjoy some of the images from our Gala evening.
