10 years of asthma genetics research at qimr berghofer
Dr Manual Ferreira,
Asthma Genetics,
QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute
The Asthma Genetics Laboratory, which was established 10 years ago, will be (temporarily) closing its doors in January. In this talk, I will summarise our research highlights, including results from various GWAS, as well from functional, mouse and clinical studies.
Dr Manuel Ferreira graduated in Biology from the University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 2001. He then moved to the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute (2001–2006), where he completed a PhD in Human Genetics. This was followed by a post-doc at Harvard University (USA, 2006–2008). After returning to QIMR Berghofer in 2008, Dr Ferreira established the Australian Asthma Genetics Consortium and the SHARE Consortium, two collaborative projects that aim to elucidate the genetic basis of allergic disease. He currently heads the Asthma Genetics Laboratory, focusing on the identification of risk genes for asthma, as well as pre-clinical and clinical studies of new asthma treatments.
