Holiday Science Experience

Looking to get a taste of what it’s like working in a medical research laboratory? QIMR Berghofer host a one day science experience program during the school holidays each year. Students can undertake a day of training in practical skills related to genetics, infectious disease or blood biology in our purpose built education laboratory facilities.  You will learn a range of skills including:

  • Pipetting and serial dilutions
  • DNA extraction and PCR
  • Agarose gel electrophoresis
  • Vortexing and centrifugation
  • Microscopy
  • Blood smears

The program is open to Queensland high school students in years 10, 11 or 12 and is free to attend.

2024 PROGRAM DATES

  • Tuesday 3 April, 2024 (Applications closed, offers sent)
  • Wednesday 4 April, 2024 (Applications closed, offers sent)
  • Thursday 19 September, 2024
  • Friday 20 September, 2024
  • Wednesday 11 December, 2024
  • Thursday 12 December, 2024

Applications will open in January, 2024.

Applications for the program on 3 and 4 April 2024 are now open and will close on  11 March 2024 where upon successful applicants will be notified of their place in the program.  Places are limited, so if you do not receive an offer in this round, we strongly encourage you to re-apply for future rounds.
