DAMIEN SHARES HIS JOURNEY
Damien Thompson was 23 years old when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Immediately after a bone marrow transplant, Damien developed graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and has spent the last 10 years battling the debilitating condition. This is his story...
'After my chemotherapy finished, I travelled to Brisbane for a bone marrow transplant. Even though I was now technically "in remission", my outlook wasn’t favourable without the transplant.
'The oncologist mentioned GVHD as a risk a few times, where my body could reject and attack my organs. There was optimism in the air with people saying "you’re going to be fine", as my donor was my brother Aaron who was luckily a perfect match,' Damien said.
