The QIMR Berghofer / MNHHS Statistics Unit provides firstly, statistical consultancy and secondly, collaboration on research projects and publications with scientists and clinicians at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute (QIMR Berghofer) and the Metro North Hospital and Health Service (MNHHS). The Statistics Unit, consisting of a senior biostatistician, three independent biostatisticians and two support biostatisticians, have financial support from Queensland Government core (QIMR Berghofer) and RBWH Foundation (RBWH). It also received financial support from research grants where collaborative work was carried out on specific projects.

The Statistics Unit’s output and contributions to medical and public health research productivity in 2014 were as follows:

  • authorship on 53 peer reviewed publications, 40 (75%) in journals with an impact factor >2 (moderate impact) and 12 (23%) with an impact factor >5 (moderate/high impact journals);
  • investigator role on 12 ongoing research grants (Chief (5), Associate(7)), including 8 NHMRC grants and 4 new grants;
  • a basic training program on introductory statistical themes. “Making friends with statistics” comprised five seminars and accompanying workshops for scientists and clinicians at QIMR Berghofer and MNHHS. It averaged attendance of 43 per session;
  • targeted statistical seminars for Wet Lab and for epidemiology groups;
  • academic and professional development for the biostatisticians on statistical themes, particularly complex modelling;
  • methodological expertise on collaborative projects through development and use of advanced statistical methods, particularly mixed effects generalised linear models; methylation, microarray, RNA-seq and CHIP-seq analyses; recurrent event and survival modelling; and pharmacometric modelling of parasitaemia decay curves for malaria medicines and vaccines;
  • statistical expertise as members of ethics and external research committees and as reviewers for granting bodies and journal editors.

Collectively 72 of 105 units (69%) across QIMR Berghofer and MNHHS consulted the Statistics Unit during 2014, with 47 of them (45%) being substantial users. The client base increased by 11% over that in 2013, and those making substantial use increased by 8%. There was increased intensity in 2014 for 21 of 104 established groups (20%) in QIMR Berghofer and MNHHS. Since May 2006 the Statistics Unit has provided statistical support to 86 (82%) of the QIMR Berghofer and MNHHS units.
