The QIMR-Berghofer-RBWH Statistics Unit provides firstly, statistical consultancy and secondly, collaboration on research for scientists and clinicians at QIMR Berghofer and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) across the Herston campus. The Statistics Unit, consisting of a senior biostatistician, four independent biostatisticians and two support biostatisticians, have financial support from Queensland Government core (QIMR Berghofer), the Private Practice Trust Fund and RBWH Foundation (RBWH). It also receives financial support from research grants where collaborative work is carried out on specific projects.

The Statistics Unit’s output and contributions to medical and public health research productivity in 2013 were as follows:
  • authorship on 44 peer reviewed publications, 32 (73%) in journals with an impact factor >2 (at least low/moderate impact) and 8 (18%) with an impact factor >5 (moderate/high impact journals) in 2013;
  • an investigator role on 16 ongoing research grants, including 7 NHMRC grants and 8 new grants in 2013;
  • a basic training program on introductory statistical themes. “Making friends with statistics” comprised five seminars and accompanying workshops for scientists and clinicians at QIMR Berghofer and RBWH;
  • advanced training for specialist groups in statistical modelling and in managing attrition in longitudinal studies ;
  • academic and professional development for the biostatisticians on statistical themes, particularly complex modelling;
  • methodological expertise on collaborative projects through development and use of advanced statistical methods, particularly normalisation and analysis for genetic studies, longitudinal data analysis with missing information and pharmacodynamic modelling of parasitaemia decay curves for malaria;
  • statistical expertise as members of ethics and external research committees and as reviewers for granting bodies and journal editors.

Collectively 62 of 107 (58%) units across QIMR Berghofer and RBWH consulted the Statistics Unit during 2013, with 40 (37%) of them being substantial users. The client base has largely stabilised since 2011 with increased intensity of activity for these established groups. Since May 2006 the Statistics Unit has provided statistical support to 88% of the QIMR Berghofer and RBWH units.
