Peter Beattie was born in Sydney in 1952. He is the youngest of seven children and was brought up by his grandmother in Atherton, in Queensland’s far north. He has a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from The University of Queensland, a Master of Arts (MA) from Queensland University of Technology and five honorary degrees, including an Honorary Doctor of Science from The University of Queensland and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of South Carolina.
Peter Beattie served as the 36th Premier of Queensland from June 26, 1998 to September 13, 2007 and for most of that time was Minister for Trade. After retirement from politics, he served as the Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner to the Americas from May 2008 to July 2010. He then guest lectured on global economic development strategies at Clemson University, South Carolina. He was awarded the first Biotechnology Industry Organisation’s inaugural ‘International Award for Leadership Excellence’ in 2008, and was named a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 2012 for his service to Parliament and the community of Queensland.
Peter Beattie is currently Chairman of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation; Director of the Medical Research Commercialisation Fund; NRL Commissioner; Ambassador for Life Sciences Queensland; Joint Adjunct Professor at The University of Queensland’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, and Institute for Molecular Bioscience; National Commentator and joint host of ‘Beattie and Newman’ on Sky News.
