QIMR Berghofer is saddened by the news that former Chair of the Council of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Professor John Hay AC, passed away overnight.
Professor Hay was Chair of the Council from 2009 to 2012 during a time of rapid growth, ground-breaking research, and major philanthropic and government support that culminated in the construction of the Institute’s state-of-the-art, 15-storey research facility.
In addition to his leadership of QIMR Berghofer, Professor Hay made a substantial contribution to the development of Brisbane as an internationally recognised centre of excellence in medical research and life sciences.
He was Vice Chancellor of the University of Queensland from 1996 to 2007 and in that time led the development of major new research institutes, including the Institute for Molecular Bioscience and the Queensland Brain Institute, and was instrumental in securing funding for the Translational Research Institute.
QIMR Berghofer extends its condolences to Professor Hay’s family.
